For a group of two or more traveling under roughly 500 miles each way, driving usually costs less than flying for Thanksgiving 2026, even with gas at $4.43 a gallon. Airfare is charged per person; a tank of gas is charged once per car. Hopper’s 2026 Holiday Travel Index puts the average domestic Thanksgiving round trip at $402 a ticket, up 31% from last year, while AAA’s national gas average was $4.4343 a gallon on September 30, 2026, up from $3.15 a year ago. Both are expensive, but they hurt different trips differently.
What Each Side Costs Right Now
Gas. AAA’s regular average was $4.4343 on September 30, compared with $4.0787 a month earlier and $3.1506 a year earlier. AAA said the September jump came as Strait of Hormuz volatility pushed crude toward $100. EIA’s September outlook is lower, averaging $3.84 for all of 2026 and $3.35 for 2027, but it was built before the late-September rise. Prices by Thanksgiving could land on either side of today’s number.
Airfare. Hopper’s index, published September 25, 2026, found:

Hopper advises booking before Halloween, flying out Monday or on Thanksgiving Day, and avoiding the Sunday return. The Points Guy, working from different data, found Thanksgiving fares running 9% to 13% above last year, so the year-over-year rise depends on the source; expect it to be somewhere between about 10% and 30%.
Bags. Delta lists $45 for the first checked bag and $55 for the second, each way, on its own baggage page, which makes one bag $90 round trip. Other major airlines charge similar amounts in press reports, but we could confirm only Delta’s on the airline’s own page.
Hotels. Hopper puts the average holiday hotel at $170 a night, flat on last year.
The Break-Even: Group Size Flips the Answer
Take an 800-mile round trip in a 28 mpg car at $4.43 gas. Fuel is about 28.6 gallons, roughly $127, for the whole car (our arithmetic). Add about $30 for tolls and food and call it $157.
Flying that same trip at Hopper’s average fare, with one bag each, $100 for airport parking or rides and $100 for ground transport at the other end (the parking, rides and bag count are our assumptions):

Even the solo traveler comes out ahead driving on this trip, because 800 miles is short for gas at this price. The numbers reverse on long hauls: at 2,000 round-trip miles fuel alone is about $316 in the same car, plus two or three hotel nights at $170, and a single traveler’s airfare can win. Fuel Is Not the Whole Cost of a Mile
AAA’s Your Driving Costs 2026 study, released September 17, puts total ownership at $12,863 a year for a new car, or $1,071.92 a month, and per-mile totals at 15,000 miles a year of $0.705 for a medium sedan and $0.962 for a medium SUV. Those figures include depreciation, insurance and financing, most of which you pay whether or not you take the trip, so they overstate a one-off drive. What About an Electric Car or a Hybrid?
AAA found EV charging can cost up to 70% less than gas, but EVs still cost more than $3,000 a year more to own because of faster depreciation. On a road trip the fast-charger price matters: public fast charging is often quoted around $0.45 to $0.53 a kWh, which can make a long trip in an EV closer to gas than home charging suggests (single-source figure, treat as an estimate). How Many People Are Traveling This Year
AAA has not published a 2026 Thanksgiving forecast yet; it usually arrives in mid-November. Its 2025 forecast counted 81.8 million travelers, a record, with about 73 million (roughly 90%) going by car and about 6 million by air. Most Americans drive at Thanksgiving, and a high gas price has not historically changed that: the cheapest option for most families is the one already in the driveway.
